SUPER Sedan driver Marc Giancola is the Perth Motorplex Driver of the Year after receiving the award at the Koorliny Arts Centre in Kwinana on Thursday night.

Giancola topped the points from the panel of the judges in recognition for a strong season behind the wheel.

“It’s pretty amazing, over the years  you win a lot of things but this is huge in a sense that there is a group of people who have seen what you are doing and doing a pretty good job, so it’s an honour,” Giancola said.

“The club has over the last four to five years has lifted the profile of the division, we are not ripping up the cars like we used to.

“And the quality of the cars is just outstanding…the competition is lifting all the time.”

Giancola’s award was one of many presented to honour the stars of the 2010/11 season.

If you want to win a Super Sedan race at the Perth Motorplex these days you need to beat Marc Giancola or Gary Higgs.

Hands down they were the dominant duo in the Southside Engine Centre Super Sedan track championship this year.

On many nights they races wheel to wheel, entertaining the crowds, and probably themselves as they pushed their machinery and skills to the limit without taking out each other.

At the end of the season there could only be one winner and this time around it was Giancola but rest assured Higgs will be going through everything in the off-season looking for anything that will give him an advantage.

Third overall in the championship was former WA champion Kodee Brown who makes the long haul from Broome for most of the big shows and is also entertaining in the race car and on the microphone after the events.

Giancola paid credit to father Tony who has been a mainstay in his racing for many years.

“I have a huge group of guys who have crewed for us for years and got huge experience behind them.

“In any form of motorsport you can give the best driver in the world the worst car and he ain’t going to win a race.”

“It’s always good to be up there every week,” Higgs said.

“If you are there’s someone else who is not.

“We had a new package this year (new engine and new car) and we were really happy with it.”
